How to Get Rid of Cold Spots

Cold spots are a common problem with older HVAC units. As your unit ages, it becomes less efficient. But what if your HVAC system isn’t even 15 years old (the average lifespan for an HVAC system)? In this case, unbalanced air temperatures might be to blame.

Here McMaster, your local HVAC and air conditioning contractor, shares some air balancing tips to help evenly distribute air throughout your interior:

Keep appliances away from the thermostat. Your thermostat might have lowered the temperature because it’s picking up heat from electronics nearby. That’s why you should keep appliances away from the thermostat.

Check the windows for drafts. It’s also possible that heat is escaping your home through cracks in your windows. How can you tell if there are drafts in your home? By using the incense trick. Shut all the windows and doors and light an incense stick near the windows; the smoke should float towards the source of the draft.

Make sure nothing is blocking the air vents. Your HVAC system won’t be able to distribute warm air evenly if there’s furniture blocking the air vents.

Replace your air filter. Dirty air filters can prevent warm air from flowing through your home and reducing indoor air quality. As a rule, the air filters should be replaced every 30 to 60 days, or every 15 to 30 days if anyone in your family has allergies or respiratory conditions.

Check your HVAC system’s capacity. Your HVAC system might not be big enough to cool your entire house. Remember: when buying an HVAC unit, there’s no such thing as a one-size-fits-all approach.

If you’re still experiencing hot spots even after checking the air vents and replacing the filter, there might be an underlying HVAC issue. The only way to find out the root cause of hot spots in your home is to have a technician from a heating and air company inspect your HVAC system.
